Avoiding Doorway Pages

 

 

A doorway page is a full page banner advertisement that is specifically created to draw search engine users to a website. Doorway pages contain valuable keywords used to peak the interest of search engine spiders, in fact doorway pages are created exclusively for the search engines in an effort to obtain a higher ranking. They contain very little information, relying on "click here" links and most include nonsensical text without the use of imaging and formatting to create content. When a search engine user lands on a doorway page, they see those intriguing keywords and an invitation to click on a link to get more information. When they click on this link, the doorway page then redirects them to the website homepage. When you see just a few carefully selected keywords and an invite to click for more, you know you have landed on a doorway page. The inability to navigate the underlying website from this page is also another clue that you have landed on a doorway page. Finding information about doorway pages can get a bit confusing because several names are used for a website doorway page. Bridge page, window page, jump page, and gateway page are just some of the names used for doorway pages.

Google, Yahoo, and other search engines have policies that ban the use of doorway pages. If you choose to use a doorway page for your website, you run the risk of being banned from inclusion in search results by the search engines. This is in direct opposition to what you want to do with the search engine optimization of your website in order to rank well with the search engines, thereby increasing your visibility on the internet. Aside from the major blow to your online success that a ban from the search engines will cause, creating a doorway page holds no guarantee of sales of your product. Most web users when confronted with the need to click one more time to get to the home page will just abandon the search or close the page down. This only results in lost patronage, sales, and revenues for you.

It is true that a website doorway page can cause your website to be picked up and given a high ranking result by search engines. Internet vultures use this initial gain as a method of taking money away from unsuspecting web owners. However, the real truth of this is that the gain, if made, is only a temporary one, as soon as the search engine figures out that this is a doorway page, which as already stated, contains no imaging, formatting or real information, it will be dropped like a hot potato. Search engines and internet surfers do not like such trickery and you will lose more than it will ever be possible to gain from a doorway page, and an excellent reason for why you should not use them for SEO. The use of website doorway pages is also considered to fall under the category of Black Hat search engine optimization. This is not the direction you want to take for your website and its SEO needs.

If search engines did not exist, then webmasters looking for shortcuts would have no use for doorway pages and the use of them would eventually cease. So for the sake of your website and your success on the internet, forego the use of a doorway page and instead put the emphasis on peaking search users interests with a captivating main page. Follow this principle for all of the other pages in your website and you will have a captivating website that is set to earn higher sales and revenues from website visitors.
