Google PageRank – Practical Uses

 

 

Google PageRank is a numerical value that is allotted by Google to show the importance of a web page. A PageRank could be considered to be a sort of voting system where the site that has maximum number of links, meaning that it has the maximum number of votes for the site. So a page having a higher number of links usually has a higher page ranking.

 

Currently, the Google algorithm does not put much emphasis on PageRank. The reason for this is that a PageRank only determines the amount and type of inbound links a website receives. However, in the process, the text of links and information content of these linked pages are not taken into consideration. And it is these factors that are important in determining page ranking of web pages, so they are considered in consecutive versions of the Google algorithm.

 

Today, more emphasis is placed in ranking algorithms using thematic PageRank. This means that pages with related content that are linked together are given more importance. It is possible to find out the PageRank of a web page using a Google Toolbar. This toolbar shows PageRank values from the range of 0 to 10. However, the exact PageRank probability value is not disclosed here; it is only the PageRank range of a site that is displayed.

 

By checking the PageRank of a website, a user can conduct a quick check on the popularity of the website and evaluate the competitive level of a search query. Though PageRank does not provide the right information about page referral, with the help of a PageRank, it is possible to get a feel of the popularity level of the website. It is also possible to follow the trends that develop from search engine optimization work.

 

There is basically a ‘rule of thumb’ for measuring the PageRank of websites written in English, websites having an average popularity usually have a PageRank that lies between 4 and 5. Those websites which have a PageRank of 6 are considered to be a popular site while a PageRank of 7 is not possible for a regular webmaster! In fact, if you manage to get a PageRank of eight, nine or ten, you really have to congratulate yourself as this is a feat that is accomplished only by sites like Microsoft, Google and Yahoo.

 

There is another use and benefit of PageRanks. It is very useful in situations where links are exchanged in the same conditions. In such cases, you can compare the quality and content of the web pages that are offered for exchange and make sure that they are similar to your own site. With this you can decide if the exchange should be accepted or not.

 

PageRank is indirectly used in the evaluation of the competitiveness a particular query generates. This means that if a site is displayed to have a PageRank of 6 – 7 by search engines, it is difficult for a site with a PageRank of 4 to reach the top of the results of the search engine under the same query.  

 

Google PageRank is also used in inbound link strategy where it is found that web pages having inbound links from pages with a PageRank of 8 are better than having a link from a page having a PageRank of 4. So it is shown that the higher the PageRank of the link to your site, the higher the boosting of your web page. However, let it be noted that the number and quality of outbound links from the incoming page link is unimportant. In fact, some time back, webmasters used to buy links having high PageRanks just to boost a web page.
