Keywords in Page Names

With so many pages available on the internet, in the billions and increasing by hundreds of thousands every day, search engines periodically change their search algorithms or strategies so as to pick the best of the web pages relevant to a particular search keyword, in the most optimal way. Call it reverse engineering or with any other similar term, but webmasters are also equally smart and are constantly tracking this tendency and making changes accordingly to their web pages so that it will never fall out of favor with popular search engine searches technically. The current topic of discussion – keywords in page names – is one such aspect discovered by webmasters by constant experimentation, which is found to make tremendous improvements to one’s webpage’s search engine rankings.

For those who are new to the term search engine optimization or SEO, it is a way of designing a webpage in order to make it appealing to search engine spiders. By effectively weighing the website’s contents, tags, Meta tags, and page design, one could catch the attention of search engines looking for web pages in the cyberspace, to match the search query given by some curious netizens.

Keywords in page names – as the terms suggests – is the inclusion of relevant keywords in the file name of the web page, in an innovative way. But, including keywords randomly does not serve any purpose, and in a worse case, it could even forfeit the advantage for search engines rate such websites as spam and demote in page rankings. Hence, ideally, the keywords in page names must be short, comprehensible, and must be put in the format, keyword-phrase.asp or page-name.asp, instead of pagename.asp. The purpose of this arrangement (words separated by a hyphen) is that page name or file name will be easily readable – for both the search engines and netizens. One more aspect to note here is that page names is not a place to stuff in too many keywords or phrases. Instead, those words used in page names must be relevant to the contents of the page and never too long or clumsy. If one over stretches this limit, the result would be negative.

Finally, use only smaller case letters in the page name, both for keywords and page names. Upper case letters are not acceptable and won’t help the page rankings or readability in now way.

To sum it up, from a web designer’s perspective, while hosting the webpage, name the website in such a way that it is optimized, short, readable, and relevant to the basic theme or purpose of the webpage. In fact, it is not a difficult thing - to name a page or to find out the core content of the webpage - but can be easily done with little application of one’s mind and few proof readings. The owner of the website also could help one in this regard. But, take care not to over do it for it will solicit undesired results or responses from search engines.

Tail piece: Search engine optimization includes various factors and it is the optimization of all these aspects that eventually contributes to better page rankings. That is, naming a webpage alone won’t help improve the page rankings phenomenally. Instead, it must be done alongside other SEO efforts, in a coordinated manner. Also, it is important not to get hit listed by search engines. Once, black listed by popular search engines for some misconduct, it can be really difficult to gain the trust back, and hence better page rankings. If such a thing happens, then it is better to abandon that webpage altogether than trying for any patch up, corrective action or further page improvements.
