Keywords Meta Tag

Keywords Meta Tag is one of three important Meta tags used in an html page. It follows the syntax <META NAME = “Keywords” CONTENT = “your keywords here separated by comas and not preferably space”> and is placed after the <title> and Meta description tags, inside the <head></head> part of the html code.

The contents of keywords Meta tags are visible to search engines only, so its purpose is solely search engine specific. In fact, it was that portion of the html code of a webpage that search engines used to refer to in order to rank a webpage  in the earlier days, when the search engine databases were small and the search algorithm still in its nascent stages. But, like any other thing in this world, soon people began to misuse this apparent weakness of search engine search algorithms and began to stuff in unnecessary and irrelevant keywords in keywords Meta tags to pep up the page rankings. The result, for some time at least, search engines listed non-relevant sites in the search results and users were in turn forced to refer to web pages that are in no way linked to their search keywords, thus undermining the entire concept of web search itself.

But, as soon as search engines found out the flaw, they quickly reformatted their search algorithms, integrating other factors such as the contents of the website and keyword density etc to rank a webpage and almost entirely avoiding keywords Meta tags and Meta tags in general. Further, search engines started to rank the websites abusing keywords as spam and blacklisting it forever.

So, given the secondary status meted out to keywords Meta tags by most search engines today, how relevant is the tag in reality? Well, keywords Meta tag’s relevance is not that much as it was before since it alone cannot do any substantial contribution to search engine optimization today. It is no way is used exclusively for page ranking by most search engines. Hence, while webpage designing, if one is hard pressed for time and want to do away with some irrelevant tags, keywords Meta tags should be the first one in the firing line. For a website with relevant and well written contents and design, the absence of keywords Meta tags or its contents is not going to have any impact in the search results or page rankings.

On the flip side, having keywords Meta tag in the code either is not of any problem as it is not going to make any significant difference to page status. But, on a later date, if search engines reformulate their search algorithms, and in the new logic if they start considering keywords Meta tag contents again, in which case, having keywords Meta tag in the code will beneficial. Remember, search engine optimization is the result of a cumulative effort involving a variety of factors, and if keywords Meta tag contents could be decisive in the event of a change of plans in the search engine algorithm, why not tap that potential?

Finally, before winding up, few tips on how to fill keywords Meta tag wisely.

Only use relevant keywords in the keywords Meta tag and that without unwanted or senseless repetition. If the keywords are included without any apparent logic and the same keyword appearing again and again, search engines might label such websites as spam and push it down in page rankings, a fate no website would like to suffer. Ideally, a keyword must not come more than three to four times within the keywords Meta tag and none twice in a single row. Remember, variations of a keyword – plurals, tense, CAPS – are all considered the same by search engines.
