If you have a large website, you could create a navigation menu that somewhat resembles a bread crumb trail to the different pages of the website. This means that the visitor is led from the home page to the respective parts of the website, page by page. Another option for a great navigation menu is one where the page changes according to where the visitor is. However, though these navigation menus are rather interesting, search engines find it difficult to spider all the sites that use dynamic menus.

It has been found through research that navigation menus should not have an excess of eight links in the site. This is because if you provide more choices to the users, they find it rather difficult to decide which web page to use. The lower the number of links; the easier the choice is for the user. And just think, having too many links in the navigation menu will only lead the visitor to think that the site is a large site, and may worry that they would find it difficult to navigate through the complicated site.

It is just as important to have a very informative and useful website, as it is important to you have an effective navigation menu on the website. The links in the navigation menu are the links through which visitors will be able to search the website for correct content. And besides that, the search engines use the links of the navigation menu while they spider your site. So it can be said that the success of a website is indirectly dependant on its navigation menu.
