One Page -- One Keyword Phrase

One page – one keyword phrase – let this be a thumb rule in all kinds of search engine optimization efforts. This realization is borne out of the fact that too many keywords or keyword phrases in a single webpage could do more damage than any real benefit.

More than 90% of the people using the World Wide Web rely on search engines to reach the websites of their choice, and they do so by searching for an appropriate keyword, which they think is closely linked with the webpage they are searching for. Hence, it is only natural that search engines also give importance to keywords and they rank websites according to the relevance of its contents and how optimally it is centered around a particular topic/subject/ and hence keyword.

When webmasters and other search engine optimization experts finally decoded this search engine’s perspective about ranking pages, they all started to tailor make their websites to suit the search engine algorithm by stuffing in keywords necessarily, and sometimes at least ending up overdoing it as well - which in fact is the exact topic of discussion of the present article. To put it in simpler terms, optimal distribution of keywords or key phrases in a webpage attracts a search engine spider’s attention, but too many of the keywords could actually do more harm than good. The first thing is that, if there are too many keywords included everywhere in a single page, the search engine might consider it as spam and respond by demoting the website in page rankings. If that does not happen, having many keywords in a single web page will actually dilute the importance of the main keyword or key phrase that may be more closely linked to the web page content. If that occurs, in reality, no search engine optimization happens and the webpage continues to relinquish at some far corner of the search engine results. Either way, it will be a disaster for the concerned website.

Therefore, it will be optimal to limit the keyword phrases to one or two in every web page, even if it is not the main page and lies in a subdirectory. So, while designing the page itself, spend some time researching on all relevant keywords in the context of the web page content, and pick the two or three most important ones that you think people are more likely to use in searches. Ideally, it must be one keyword phrase per page. If there are too many keywords that you think are relevant to the web page content, then it will be a prudent idea to consider making separate web pages for the different keywords. Having separate pages for the different keywords won’t cause any negative effects in search results, but having more than one or two keyword phrases in a single web page will certainly dilute the importance of the main keyword itself. Remember, such a thing actually undermines all the efforts put into search engine optimization until then, and brings everything to naught in one stroke. No one would want such a thing to happen, especially if it is one’s own website.

One final point – as it is the home page that needs more visibility than a page in a subdirectory, it is important that the keyword phrase optimization for the home page be done strictly on the one page – one keyword phrase – line. Let there be no second key word phrase in the same page. For inner pages, to an extent, it is acceptable to have two or three keyword phrases as well, but it is advisable not to take the same risk with the home page.
