Title Tag

In search engine optimization – SEO – one of the many important factors that are enhanced or ‘employed’ to lure the search engines to list a particular webpage in the search results includes the ‘customizing’ of the Title Tag contents. For somebody who have learnt the basis of HTML or any other scripting language might know what the ‘title tag’ is, usually represented by <title></title>. It is in this tag within which a particular text is embedded so as to display it as the title on the top of the browser displaying the webpage. The title gives the user a good idea about what the page he/she is currently viewing is all about. Every webpage code will have a title tag - <title> - option, irrespective of the scripting language used.

Now, what to do or what to include exactly in the title tag for search engine optimization? Well, this depends on understanding how the title tag contents will be used by search engines. Most search engines extract the text included in the title tag to display it alongside the search results as snippets. This must be read in the backdrop that search engines always look for information and relevant content in a webpage. So if one could make the contents of the title tag relevant and informative in the context of the webpage, chances are more that the search engine may rank the page higher and always list amongst the top in the search results.

As a rule of thumb, one can safely assume that search engines extract 50-80 characters from the title tag to make the snippet in the search results. So the essence of the webpage must be included in these 80 characters, with all the relevant keywords and phrases. On a flip side, one must refrain from using too many words or characters inside the title tag for it may turn out to be counterproductive. Chances are high that search engines may classify such websites are spam, for trying too much to dupe the search engine spiders.

Apart from page rankings, there is another advantage of weighing the contents of the title tag appropriately, That is, since it is the contents of the title tag that is been picked up by the search engines to put alongside the search results, a well crafted title tag content could act as a de facto marketing tool, educating the users about what the website is and its services are all about. As this is a promotion without any additional cost, why one should not consider trying it? After all, no one has to pay Google or any search engine for this!

Tail Piece: SEO or search engine optimization is the way of designing or tailor making a website to suit the search algorithm used by the popular search engines. It employs a variety of factors from selective web design to use of keywords and keyword density to lure the search engine spider to rank a particular website. Packing the contents of the TITLE tag is one such search engine optimization technique.
